Memorial Day 2014

Memorial Day 2014

May 26th is Memorial Day this year, not Veterans Day but Memorial Day. This is the day we pay honor to those who served and died, the ones who gave all. We can never repay them, except that we continue to defend the freedom they gave us. They lie in all parts of the world, mostly forgotten as individuals, but they each had parents, possibly siblings or a spouse who grieved at their loss. They forfeited their lives so that we may live. Take pause this day to honor them.

Once upon a time, Memorial Day was celebrated on Memorial Day; now it has been morphed into a three-day weekend so people can travel, picnic, barbecue and mow the lawn. Life moves on and values change and the meaning of holidays becomes forgotten. Christmas could not escape that affliction, nor could Easter, so I cannot be surprised that Memorial Day suffers the same disease. Yet, as with Christmas and Easter, how we honor a day is within our own hearts, not that of the masses. This video reflects my thoughts.
